A pitcher’s prayer
May I stay healthy in arm, body, mind and spirit.
May I love the game, respect the game, and have fun playing the game.
May I bring confidence and a positive attitude onto the mound.
May I be grateful for this opportunity, full of humility, thankful for life.
May my efforts today take me farther down the road of realizing my dream.
May I inspire others to realize their own dreams.
May I bring peace, love, and joy into the world.
May I be present, one pitch, one play, one moment at a time.
I don’t remember exactly when I came up with that poem/prayer. It probably came to me while I was throwing some time earlier this year, out in the bitter Wisconsin cold. Why is it that our greatest creativity arrives when we let go and simply receive? Unsolved mysteries of the universe lol. I ain’t no poet, but that prayer inspires and motivates me on a daily basis. We all need little reminders, such as memorable pictures, emotionally charged words, or meaningful trinkets, to help us stay on the narrow path we have set out on to realize our dreams. This is one of those things for me.
Opening day happened. The Wolfpack didn’t fare too well on the day with the firsts falling 7-2 and the reserves losing 7-4 to the Werribee Giants. I take some consolation in my solid pitching appearance: 2 ip, 0 r, 0 h, 2 bb, 0 k. Another step in the right direction. A busy week ahead with emails to send out to European clubs, ~30 hours at my new job :), and continuing the daily incremental improvement with the pitching dream.
3 playoff matches for the Western Bulldogs. 3 victories. 1st grand final in 55 years. 1st premiership in 62 years. I jumped on the bandwagon at the perfect time and it has been a blast to support them during my time in Melbourne thus far. I can get over the top with symbolism, baseball player superstitiousness/OCDness, and generally searching for meaning/significance/serendipity when there isn’t any, but these Bulldogs seriously have captured my heart. I connect deeply with their underdog story and their ultimate triumph. I intend to do the same. It’ll be a satisfying offseason for them. My party is just getting started.
PS: I’m closing in on this blog’s 1 year anniversary (10 days away). I think I ought to do some special kind of post on that day to celebrate. It sure has been a wonderful year.
